Origin & Livestyle

The latin name starts with crotaphytus. The second name depends on their habitat, build or pattern. The name collared lizard is derived from the two black bands around their neck. They’re also nicknamed “Mountain Boomer”.

These collourfull lizards mainly reside in the areas around Texas, Collorado, Kansas, California and the north of Mexico.

Their habitat is fairly large but is mainly occupied by the Crotaphytus collaris.

The collared lizards are real “semi”-arid/savanna creatures. Temperatures vary from 55° C during the summer and sub-zero during wintertime. Therefor these reptiles hibernate, sometimes up to 5 months. It is commonly believed that these animals sleep in large groups, this is not the case. Of course it could happen that individuals sleep close together but that is a coincidence. In normal situations an individual will have/look for a sleeping place of it’s own, while residing with others in the same area.

Male specimens are more difficult to handle during the season. In dominant males it’s usually the choice between adapt or leave, which can lead to fierce fighting with dangerous injuries.

Besides being a real sun-worshipper, the collared lizards is also a very active lizard. They can run very fast. If on the run they can even run on their hind-legs.
